The Plumbing Association of San Diego (PASD) has come up with a homeowners guide in the correct usage of plumbing fixtures around the home. One of the plumbing usage safety tips that they have posted in their official website is the appropriate use of bathroom. The PASD says, while the bathroom is one of the most used areas around the house and could suffer wear and tear, inappropriate bathroom usage habits can expedite the damage to the bathroom plumbing fixtures.

One of the common usage mistakes that the PASD cited is failing to use water softeners. Luke Petersen, President of the PASD says the mineral build-up could damage the fixtures in the long run, including those expensive water heaters. Apart from installing water softener, the homeowner should also look into an annual maintenance plan that is meant for homes built in areas with hard water.

Another common bathroom usage mistake according to Petersen is failing to use strainers in the shower and tub drain. Falling hair and soap particles can cause clogs within the plumbing system that at first could only cause slow drains. Leading to another common bathroom plumbing mistake which is using drain cleaners. Petersen says drain cleaners are very damaging to plumbing fixtures because the chemical used in these solutions are all very strong and highly corrosive. “Drain cleaners are very damaging, and at the same time does not guarantee long term results. Yes it may work, but only temporarily. What is effective is to call for the services of a qualified plumber who can get to the bottom of things, and addresses the issue for the long term,” Petersen enthuses.

The PASD goes on to add that one of the worst practices any homeowner or household member can do is to treat the toilet as a trash receptacle. Continuously throwing paper and sanitary products in the toilet like tissue, sanitary napkin, tampons, baby wipes, panty liners, diapers and the like is a sewage disaster waiting to happen. The PASD warns sewer back-ups are not just an inconvenience, it is unsanitary can definitely be the cause of the spreading of illnesses around the house. It can also give way to water damage that is very expensive to remediate.

“Put a trash can next to the toilet so that there will be no excuse for anyone to use the toilet as a trash bin,” advices Petersen. He also added that for homes with toddlers and other curious children, a safety toilet lid lock should be installed to prevent the young kids from throwing toys or anything in the toilet bowl. Another bathroom usage mistake is failing to address leaks right away. Petersen says a homeowner should address toilet leaks, faucet leaks and the like right away to avoid even bigger trouble and damage.
